We’ve got some BIG news! Last week, we joined forces with Guild Esports to present Gaming for Good: the world’s first net-carbon-zero Fortnite tournament. Carbon-net-zero? I hear you say… Well, we offset all the carbon emissions generated by the computers involved. Pretty cool, eh? And, as we are all about creating a legacy, for every tree cut down over the tournament, we are planting one in real life #nobiggy.

For those who haven’t heard of Guild, let us introduce you… Co-owned by David Beckham (you heard that right), Guild is the fastest growing e-gaming sports team in the world. Fielding the best gaming pros across the likes of Fortnite, Rocket League, FIFA & Valorant, Guild’s goal is to inspire the next gen (much like the team at Difference Makers), and they care about the planet too!

Here at Difference Makers HQ, we want to tell the world that making a change on our planet is something everyone can do (yes, even you!). Kinda like a global project that we can all be a part of. By working with these gaming legends, we hope to show that the skills you learn when kicking a$$ on or offline can be useful in a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), and may even help you change the world someday. Neat!

Not buying it? Just think about it… things like reaction times, decision making and problem solving are all relevant. Working in STEM doesn’t mean you have to be a genius mathematician, or a world-beating engineer (although top dawgs are always welcome).  STEM is a place where like-minded people, of all backgrounds and skill levels, can come together and find ways to make the world a better place. It’s why we did Gaming for Good: to show how much of a difference we can all make if we put our minds to it.

The tournament featured pro players Anas and Hen, and streamers GeeNelly and TN25, alongside members of the Guild Esports academy, and together they cut down a staggering 557 trees! GG!

The majority of these will be planted across the UK in November during tree-planting season and will absorb a whopping 3,300kg of CO2 over the course of a year.

“I think STEM sits at the centre of everything we do, from new science technologies to engineering development in the world.”

Liam Davies, STEM expert and all-round legend at Guild Esports

And Liam's right, of course: as technology becomes an ever-greater part of our lives, with no signs of slowing down, it’s our responsibility to ensure that it’s doing what it can to safeguard our future, and not just make our lives easier.

We hope this epic collab shows you that everyone has the power to make a change. And how by playing games like Fortnite you are developing skills that could make you a STEM superstar, and even help protect the future of our planet! While we’re busy planting the 557 trees chopped down, check out our social channels for more inspirational stories and see how you can make a difference too.

Be sure to stay tuned as our love affair with all things STEM in unexpected places isn’t over yet! We’re excited to be taking over the worlds of fashion and music next, and want you to come along for the journey, so be sure to keep a close eye on our social channels over the coming weeks for exciting news!

And don't worry if you missed the live tournament - you can watch it here.
